Toni Frissell

Photographer: photographer, United States

American photographer Toni Frissell established her reputation by moving fashion and portrait assignments out of indoor studios and into open-air settings using natural light. Her professional career began in the early 1930s with regular commissions for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. During the Second World War, she took volunteer assignments with the American Red Cross and the Women's Army Corps, photographing military nurses as well as the Tuskegee Airmen stationed in Europe. Her postwar subjects included figures such as Winston Churchill and the Kennedy family. She later settled on Long Island, where she died of Alzheimer's disease in April 1988.
