Glenn Miller
Music: bandleader, composer, arranger, United States
Glenn Miller was an American bandleader, arranger, and composer whose orchestra came to define the swing era. Crafting an unmistakable sound around a clarinet lead over four saxophones, he produced an unbroken run of best-selling recordings between 1939 and 1942, including In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, and Chattanooga Choo Choo. At the height of his commercial success, he disbanded his civilian ensemble to join the United States Army Air Forces, bringing modern big band arrangements to Allied troops across Europe. His military aircraft disappeared over the English Channel in December 1944 while flying to liberated Paris.
