Bill Haley
Music: singer, guitarist, bandleader, songwriter, United States
Bill Haley was an American rock and roll pioneer whose energetic fusion of country, western swing, and rhythm and blues helped ignite a global musical revolution. Fronting his group The Comets, Haley scored historic early hits, most notably his 1954 recording of Rock Around the Clock, which became a worldwide phenomenon and the defining anthem of early youth culture. Throughout the mid-1950s, he remained a central figure of the genre through international tours and musical films. Although his commercial standing waned as rock evolved later in the decade, he remained a celebrated live performer until his death in Harlingen, Texas, in 1981.
