John Ford
Director: director, producer, United States
John Ford was an American director of monumental stature whose painterly frames and mythic Westerns came to define American visual culture. Beginning in the silent era, he honed an economical, visually eloquent storytelling style before finding vast acclaim in the late 1930s. Ford won a record four Academy Awards for Best Director, capturing the stark beauty of Monument Valley, the harsh trials of the Great Depression, and deeply evocative portraits of Irish heritage and military camaraderie. His long artistic union with John Wayne yielded some of cinema's most revered character studies. Ford remained a foundational force in cinema until his death in California in 1973.
