Judy Garland
Film: singer, actress, United States
Born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 1922, Judy Garland remains one of show business's most astonishing talents. Starting as a child vaudeville performer with her sisters, she joined MGM and achieved immortality as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz in 1939. Garland illuminated musical cinema throughout the 1940s in works like Meet Me in St. Louis and Easter Parade, later delivering a tour de force performance in the 1954 remake of A Star Is Born. A triumphant concert artist who set Carnegie Hall records, Garland died accidentally from an overdose in London in June 1969.
