John Wayne
Film: actor, director, producer, United States
John Wayne was an American actor who stood as the pre-eminent symbol of the cinematic Western and rugged American individualism for nearly half a century. Born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, he toiled in minor serials before John Ford cast him as the Ringo Kid in Stagecoach in 1939. That breakthrough launched a storied collaboration with Ford and director Howard Hawks, producing masterpieces including Red River, The Quiet Man, and The Searchers. Wayne won an Academy Award for True Grit in 1969, and concluded his career with The Shootist in 1976. He died of cancer in Los Angeles in June 1979 at age seventy-two.
