W. C. Fields
Film: comedian, actor, screenwriter, United States
W. C. Fields was an American comic actor and writer whose misanthropic, grandiloquent persona made him one of the defining humorists of the early sound era. He started his career in vaudeville and the Ziegfeld Follies as an internationally celebrated trick juggler before making a transition to silent films and then talkies. Fields's distinctive drawl, cynical worldview, and distrust of dogs and children were deployed to brilliant satirical effect in masterpieces such as It's a Gift and The Bank Dick, which he often wrote under colourful pseudonyms. He paired memorably with Mae West in My Little Chickadee. Fields passed away in Pasadena, California, on Christmas Day in 1946 at sixty-six.
