Edward G. Robinson
Film: actor, Romania
Edward G. Robinson was one of the definitive character actors of American cinema, celebrated for his gravelly voice, intense gaze and exceptional dramatic depth. Born in Bucharest, he found stardom in 1931 with Little Caesar, an archetype-defining performance that helped launch the golden age of gangster cinema. He subsequently proved his range across intricate film noir classics directed by Fritz Lang, period epics and thoughtful character studies. Outside the studio, he was an ardent philanthropist and noted art connoisseur. Robinson died of cancer in Hollywood in 1973 shortly after completing his moving final performance in the dystopian drama Soylent Green.
