Audrey Hepburn

Film: actress, Belgium

Audrey Hepburn, born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Brussels in 1929, brought a fresh, elegant charm to postwar Hollywood. After early British film appearances, she won an Academy Award for her Hollywood debut in Roman Holiday in 1953. Over the subsequent decade, Hepburn established herself as a fashion icon and sensitive screen actress in classics including Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, and My Fair Lady. Her final decades were defined by passionate humanitarian work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Following a distinguished life in art and philanthropy, Hepburn died of cancer at her home in Tolochenaz, Switzerland, in January 1993.
