Burt Lancaster
Film: actor, producer, United States
Burt Lancaster was an athletic, magnetic leading man who developed into one of the most respected dramatic actors of classical Hollywood. A former circus acrobat born in New York City, he made an electrifying film debut in the noir landmark The Killers. He soon asserted independence from the studio system by co-founding the pioneering production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster. Renowned for his physical presence and moral complexity, he starred in enduring classics including From Here to Eternity, Sweet Smell of Success, and Elmer Gantry, for which he won an Academy Award. Later working with European masters such as Luchino Visconti in The Leopard, Lancaster remained active into the late 1980s before dying in Los Angeles in 1994.
