Ava Gardner
Film: actress, United States
Ava Gardner was an American film actress whose smouldering beauty and earthy charisma established her as one of post-war Hollywood's most magnetic stars. Signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1941, she spent years in minor parts before achieving fame as the ultimate femme fatale in Robert Siodmak's The Killers. Gardner subsequently starred in large-scale productions such as Show Boat and The Snows of Kilimanjaro, earning an Academy Award nomination for John Ford's Mogambo in 1953. Her complex screen persona culminated in John Huston's The Night of the Iguana in 1964. Living in London for much of her later life, she died there of pneumonia in 1990.
