Gene Kelly

Film: dancer, actor, director, singer, United States

Gene Kelly was an American dancer, actor, singer, and director whose athletic, energetic style revolutionised cinema choreography. Emerging from Broadway, he brought an earthier, physical dynamism to the screen, contrasting with the refined ballrooms of earlier musicals. Kelly was central to the golden age of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musicals, co-directing landmarks such as On the Town and Singin' in the Rain alongside Stanley Donen. His ballet sequence in the Academy Award-winning An American in Paris remains a high point of film art. Kelly received an Academy Honorary Award in 1952 for his contributions to screen choreography, later turning to dramatic acting and stage direction. He died in Beverly Hills in 1996.
