Bela Lugosi
Film: actor, Romania
Bela Lugosi was a Hungarian-born dramatic actor forever linked with his definitive portrayal of Count Dracula. After classical training in Budapest, he fled political unrest and settled in the United States, captivating Broadway audiences before starring in Tod Browning's 1931 film adaptation. Lugosi's formal aristocratic menace and unique cadence set the mould for the modern screen vampire. Universal teamed him repeatedly with Boris Karloff in classics like The Black Cat. Though typecasting and personal difficulties plagued his later years, leading to low-budget outings with Ed Wood, Lugosi remained dedicated to his craft. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 1956.
