Charlie Chaplin
Film: actor, director, composer, comedian, United Kingdom
Sir Charlie Chaplin was an unparalleled genius of cinema whose creation of The Tramp transformed the medium into high art. Emerging from London music halls, he moved into American films in 1914 and rapidly assumed total creative control as director, writer, and composer. Silent masterpieces like The Gold Rush and City Lights combined physical comedy with pathos. He boldly addressed modern socio-political perils in Modern Times and The Great Dictator. After decades of artistic triumphs and political controversies, he settled in Switzerland. Chaplin died peacefully at his Swiss estate in Corsier-sur-Vevey on Christmas Day 1977, universally hailed as film history's most influential pioneer.
