Bix Beiderbecke

Music: trumpeter, pianist, composer, United States

Bix Beiderbecke was an American jazz cornetist, pianist, and composer whose lyrical tone and harmonic sophistication made him one of the most influential soloists of the 1920s. Emerging from Iowa, he first gained notice with the Wolverine Orchestra before forming a prolific partnership with saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer. His pure tone and contemplative phrasing offered a compelling alternative to prevailing jazz styles, influencing generations of musicians. He joined the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in 1927, but failing health undermined his touring career. He died of pneumonia in New York City in August 1931 at the age of twenty-eight.
