Edward Steichen

Photographer: photographer, director, curator, Luxembourg

Edward Steichen was a Luxembourg-born American photographer, painter, and museum curator whose versatile vision bridged fine art pictorialism and modern commercial photography. A co-founder of the Photo-Secession group with Alfred Stieglitz, he later served as chief photographer for Condé Nast publications during the 1920s and 1930s. In the Second World War, he commanded naval photographic units and directed the Oscar-winning documentary The Fighting Lady. As Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art from 1947 to 1962, he assembled the celebrated touring exhibition The Family of Man. He passed away in West Redding, Connecticut, in January 1973.
