Cecil Beaton

Photographer: photographer, United Kingdom

Sir Cecil Beaton was a British photographer, diarist, and stage and film designer whose work epitomised elegance and high style. Rising to prominence in London during the 1920s as chronicler of the Bright Young Things, he produced celebrated society portraits for Vogue and Vanity Fair. During the Second World War, his work for the Ministry of Information captured the Blitz with poignant grace, before he was chosen as the official photographer for the 1953 Coronation of Elizabeth II. He earned multiple Academy Awards for his lavish costume and production designs for Gigi and My Fair Lady. He died in Wiltshire in January 1980.
