Horst P. Horst
Photographer: photographer, Germany
Horst P. Horst was an influential German-born photographer whose elegant, classical compositions defined twentieth-century haute couture imagery. Emerging in Paris under the mentorship of George Hoyningen-Huene, he became an essential contributor to Vogue throughout the 1930s. He mastered dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and sculpted studio poses, epitomised by his famous Mainbocher Corset image of 1939. Relocating to the United States before the Second World War, he broadened his repertoire to include interior design, celebrity portraits, and botanical studies while sustaining his relationship with fashion publishing for decades. His career spanned from the early 1930s through to the 1980s, concluding prior to his death in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in 1999.
