Dorothea Lange
Photographer: photographer, United States
Dorothea Lange was an American documentary photographer whose compassionate portraits put a human face on the Great Depression. After operating a successful portrait studio in San Francisco, she turned her lens towards the streets following the financial collapse. Employed by the Farm Security Administration, she travelled across rural America documenting displaced families and agricultural workers. Her 1936 photograph Migrant Mother became an instantly recognised symbol of endurance in hardship. During the Second World War, she documented the internment of Japanese Americans with unsparing candour. Plagued by poor health in her later years, she continued photographing until her passing in San Francisco in 1965, leaving an indelible imprint on social documentary photography.
