Film: actor, United States

Clark Gable was an American screen icon celebrated across four decades as the King of Hollywood. Born in Cadiz, Ohio, he broke through at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the early 1930s, establishing a charming yet masculine screen persona. Gable claimed an Academy Award for Frank Capra's romantic comedy It Happened One Night in 1934 and achieved immortality as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind in 1939. Following wartime military service, he sustained a successful freelance career in westerns and dramas, concluding with John Huston's The Misfits opposite Marilyn Monroe. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in November 1960 at fifty-nine.
