Dusty Springfield
Music: singer, United Kingdom
Dusty Springfield was an English singer whose sensual, husky mezzo-soprano voice made her one of the most celebrated blue-eyed soul vocalists of the twentieth century. After initial success with the folk-pop trio The Springfields, she embarked on a solo career in 1963, scoring international hits with I Only Want to Be with You and the dramatic ballad You Don't Have to Say You Love Me. Her landmark 1969 record Dusty in Memphis yielded the signature standard Son of a Preacher Man. She later enjoyed a successful chart revival in the late 1980s working alongside Pet Shop Boys. Springfield died of cancer in Henley-on-Thames in 1999 shortly before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
