Johnny Cash
Music: singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor, United States
Johnny Cash, known as the Man in Black, was an American singer-songwriter whose deep baritone and themes of redemption made him an icon of American roots music. Starting at Sun Records in the mid-1950s, he crafted hits including I Walk the Line and Folsom Prison Blues before reaching a cultural zenith with his live prison recordings in the late 1960s. Later in life, Cash enjoyed an extraordinary renaissance through his stark American Recordings series produced by Rick Rubin. He passed away in Nashville in September 2003 at seventy-one, shortly after his wife June Carter Cash.
