Myrna Loy

Film: actress, dancer, United States

Myrna Loy was celebrated as Hollywood's ideal wife, combining modern wit, effortless glamour and warm intelligence. After working through silent cinema in exotic character roles, she achieved major stardom at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer opposite William Powell in The Thin Man, launching one of the screen's most beloved comedic partnerships. She proved equally adept in sophisticated comedies and post-war dramatic masterworks, notably The Best Years of Our Lives. Outside cinema, she was an outspoken advocate for social reform and civil rights, serving with UNESCO. Loy made her final screen appearances in the early 1980s before passing away in New York City in 1993 at age 88.
