Humphrey Bogart
Film: actor, United States
Humphrey Bogart, born in New York City on Christmas Day in 1899, remains cinema's quintessential hard-boiled cynic with a hidden heart. Following theatrical work, he gained notice as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest before establishing screen stardom in 1941 with High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon. Bogart cemented his legendary status in Casablanca and formed a celebrated partnership with Lauren Bacall across several noir classics. His later work brought an Academy Award for The African Queen and critical acclaim for The Caine Mutiny. After a legendary career defining American film noir, Bogart died of oesophageal cancer in Hollywood in January 1957.
