Film: actress, United States
Lana Turner was an American actress who became one of the quintessential glamour queens and pin-up icons of 1940s Hollywood. Signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after being discovered in an ice cream parlour, she gained widespread attention as the 'Sweater Girl'. Turner developed into a capable dramatic actress, giving a defining film noir performance in The Postman Always Rings Twice. Despite intense tabloid scrutiny surrounding her private life, she sustained significant commercial success through the 1950s, securing an Academy Award nomination for Peyton Place and starring in Douglas Sirk's lavish melodrama Imitation of Life. Turner died of cancer at her home in Los Angeles in 1995.
