Ingmar Bergman
Director: director, Sweden
Ingmar Bergman was a Swedish director and playwright whose probing psychological dramas examined faith, mortality, and the intricacies of human relationships. Born in Uppsala in 1918, he worked extensively in theatre before establishing an international reputation in the mid-1950s with The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries. Bergman developed a deeply introspective cinematic style marked by luminous close-ups and intense emotional candour, collaborating repeatedly with a trusted ensemble of actors and cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Later triumphs such as Persona, Cries and Whispers, and the magnificent family chronicle Fanny and Alexander cemented his global standing. He lived in seclusion on the island of Fårö until his death in 2007.
