James Stewart was an enduring American screen actor known for his distinct, deliberate drawl and portrayal of honest, relatable men under moral pressure. He became a major box-office figure working with Frank Capra in classics like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life. Following decorated service as a bomber pilot in the Second World War, Stewart reinvented his screen persona, collaborating with director Alfred Hitchcock on complex suspense thrillers and with Anthony Mann on gritty Westerns. Stewart earned five Academy Award nominations, winning Best Actor for The Philadelphia Story. Highly respected for his long career, Stewart died in Beverly Hills in 1997 at the age of eighty-nine.
