Jerry Garcia
Music: guitarist, singer, songwriter, bandleader, United States
Jerry Garcia was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter who gained worldwide prominence as the spiritual leader and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead. Born in San Francisco, Garcia was a virtuosic improviser whose playing drew effortlessly from bluegrass, blues, folk, and jazz, steering the countercultural sound of the late 1960s into a decades-long touring phenomenon. Alongside his work with the Dead, he led the Jerry Garcia Band and engaged in acoustic and bluegrass collaborations, creating classics like Uncle John's Band and Friend of the Devil. Despite recurring health problems, he performed constantly until his death at a rehabilitation clinic in Forest Knolls, California, in 1995.
