Marvin Gaye

Music: singer, songwriter, pianist, producer, United States

Marvin Gaye was an American singer, songwriter, and producer whose supple vocal range and artistic integrity profoundly enriched modern popular music. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1939, he began as a session drummer and solo artist at Motown in the early 1960s, recording vibrant duets with Tammi Terrell and classic rhythm-and-blues hits. In 1971, he produced What's Going On, a landmark concept album confronting environmental distress, poverty, and urban conflict. Later milestones like Let's Get It On and Sexual Healing proved his lasting mastery over romantic soul. His extraordinary career ended abruptly when he died in Los Angeles in April 1984.
