Syd Barrett
Music: guitarist, songwriter, singer, United Kingdom
Syd Barrett was an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist who served as the original frontman and visionary creative force of Pink Floyd. His inventive use of dissonant guitar, surreal imagery, and whimsical English melodies guided the group through the vanguard of the psychedelic era, crystallised in the debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and groundbreaking singles like See Emily Play. Mental health struggles led to his departure from the band in 1968, after which he released two idiosyncratic solo albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. Withdrawing completely from the music industry by the mid-1970s, Barrett lived quietly in Cambridge until his death in 2006.
