Cass Elliot

Music: singer, actress, United States

Cass Elliot was an American singer celebrated for her clear contralto voice and warm stage presence. Born in Baltimore in 1941, she found international stardom as a central member of the folk-rock quartet The Mamas & the Papas, whose harmonic pop defined the mid-1960s California sound with hits such as California Dreamin'. After the group disbanded, Elliot established a successful solo career, scoring popular favourites like Make Your Own Kind of Music and performing regularly on television. She died of heart failure in Mayfair, London, in July 1974, following a triumphant series of sold-out concerts at the London Palladium.
