Toni Frissell

Photographer: photographer, United States

Toni Frissell was an American photographer celebrated for liberating fashion and portrait imagery from the confines of the indoor studio. Beginning her professional career in the early 1930s with Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, she favoured natural light and dynamic outdoor compositions. During the Second World War, she volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Women's Army Corps, producing sensitive documentation of military nurses and the Tuskegee Airmen in Europe. She later photographed prominent public figures, including the Kennedy family and Winston Churchill. She retired to Long Island, where she died of Alzheimer's disease in April 1988.
