Cary Grant

Film: actor, comedian, United Kingdom

Born Archibald Alec Leach in Bristol in 1904, Cary Grant personified debonair wit and cinematic charm. After training in English music halls and American vaudeville, he signed with Paramount in 1932 before perfecting his screen persona in peerless screwball comedies like The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby, and His Girl Friday. Grant also became Alfred Hitchcock's ideal leading man, demonstrating psychological subtlety in Notorious and North by Northwest. Gracefully stepping away from acting in 1966 after Walk, Don't Run, he remained a celebrated standard of elegance. Grant died of a stroke in Davenport, Iowa, in November 1986.
