Jack Lemmon
Film: actor, comedian, director, United States
Jack Lemmon was an exceptionally versatile American actor who balanced manic comic energy with profound dramatic pathos. After finding theatre and television work in New York, he moved to film in the early 1950s and earned an early Oscar for Mister Roberts. A prolific creative partnership with director Billy Wilder produced some of the era's finest comedies and satires, including Some Like It Hot and The Apartment. Lemmon also proved formidable in serious roles, notably depicting personal despair and corporate disillusionment. Alongside frequent collaborator Walter Matthau, he delighted audiences for generations before passing away in Los Angeles in 2001.
