Diane Arbus

Photographer: photographer, United States

Diane Arbus was an American photographer renowned for her singular, direct square-format portraits of marginalized and unconventional subjects. After running a commercial studio with her husband Allan Arbus in the 1940s and 1950s, she studied with Lisette Model and shifted her focus to street photography in New York City. Her portraits explored nudists, performers, and everyday citizens with candour and striking emotional clarity. Featured prominently in the Museum of Modern Art's influential 1967 New Documents exhibition, her work reshaped documentary photography. She took her own life in New York City in July 1971 at the age of forty-eight.
