Paul Newman

Film: actor, director, producer, United States

Paul Newman was an American actor, film director, and philanthropist who stood as one of modern cinema's most revered leading men. Known for his piercing blue eyes, dry wit, and intense character studies, he first gained national attention on Broadway and in 1950s dramas such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Over a remarkable half-century career, Newman embodied iconic antiheroes in Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Verdict, ultimately winning an Oscar for The Color of Money. Off screen, he gained distinction as an elite motor racer and committed philanthropist. Newman died of lung cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut, in September 2008 aged eighty-three.
