Fritz Lang
Director: director, producer, Austria
Fritz Lang was an Austrian-German filmmaker who shaped the visual grammar of cinematic expressionism and modern film noir. Born in Vienna in 1890, he established his reputation during Weimar Germany's golden age with architectural spectacles such as Metropolis and the seminal psychological thriller M. Fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Lang rebuilt his career in Hollywood, directing taut, fatalistic crime dramas including Fury and The Big Heat. His sharp visual geometry, deep shadows, and recurring themes of destiny, paranoia, and moral corruption profoundly influenced international cinema. Lang retired from directing in 1960 and passed away in Beverly Hills, California, in 1976.
