Man Ray
Photographer: photographer, director, United States
Man Ray was an American visual artist and photographer who became a cornerstone of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Paris. Born Emmanuel Radnitzsky in Philadelphia, he initially worked as a painter and sculptor before embracing camera work to capture his assemblages and avant-garde peers. In the 1920s he pioneered photograms, which he termed rayographs, and introduced solarisation techniques alongside collaborator Lee Miller. His fashion imagery and striking portraiture transformed early modernism. In addition to photography, he directed seminal experimental films including Le Retour à la Raison and L'Étoile de mer. He lived between Paris and the United States, producing art until his death in Paris in 1976.
