Federico Fellini
Director: director, Italy
Federico Fellini was an Italian director whose distinctive blend of autobiography, carnival extravagance, and poetic surrealism redefined post-war cinema. Born in Rimini in 1920, he began his career as a caricaturist and neorealist screenwriter before making his directorial debut. Breakthrough dramas such as La Strada and Nights of Cabiria brought early international acclaim, but it was La Dolce Vita and the autobiographical masterpiece 8½ that immortalised his dreamlike, opulent style. Collaborating closely with composer Nino Rota, Fellini crafted evocative cinematic visions of memory and human folly. He received a lifetime achievement Academy Award in early 1993 and passed away in Rome later that year.
