Ian Curtis
Music: singer, songwriter, guitarist, United Kingdom
Ian Curtis was an English singer, lyricist, and frontman whose evocative baritone voice defined the sound of post-punk band Joy Division. Born in Stretford in 1956, he helped form the band in Manchester following the 1976 Sex Pistols gig, penning lyrics characterised by intense existential dread, alienation, and brooding beauty. Along with landmark studio albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer, Curtis's emotive stage presence and the poignant single Love Will Tear Us Apart became central reference points in alternative rock. Struggling with severe depression and epilepsy, he ended his life at his home in Macclesfield in May 1980, on the eve of Joy Division's inaugural American tour.
