Sid Vicious
Music: guitarist, singer, United Kingdom
Sid Vicious was an English musician and the defining visual figurehead of the mid-1970s British punk explosion. Born John Simon Ritchie in London in 1957, he joined the Sex Pistols in early 1977 as bass guitarist, succeeding Glen Matlock. Though his musical technicality was limited, his sneering attitude, spiky aesthetic, and volatile stage conduct epitomised punk nihilism. Vicious performed on the band's notorious 1978 American tour and delivered a snarling, darkly comic cover of My Way for the film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. His turbulent life ended in Manhattan, New York, in February 1979, when he succumbed to a heroin overdose at age twenty-one.
