Jim Croce

Music: singer, songwriter, guitarist, United States

Jim Croce was an American folk-rock singer and songwriter known for his warm voice and finely observed narrative lyrics. Born in Philadelphia in 1943, he spent years labouring in odd jobs while performing in local folk clubs before achieving a major commercial breakthrough with his 1972 album You Don't Mess Around with Jim. Croce became a dominant fixture on the radio charts with enduring character sketches like Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and wistful ballads such as Time in a Bottle. His burgeoning career was abruptly cut short in September 1973 when he died in an aeroplane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana, at the age of thirty.
