Gram Parsons
Music: singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, United States
Gram Parsons was an American singer-songwriter who pioneered country rock, promoting a synthesis he called 'Cosmic American Music'. Born in Florida in 1946, he transformed the sound of The Byrds on the influential 1968 LP Sweetheart of the Rodeo before co-founding The Flying Burrito Brothers. Parsons merged traditional country instrumentation with rock attitude, later mentoring Emmylou Harris during his solo recording career in the early 1970s. Although he achieved limited commercial success during his lifetime, his two solo albums, GP and Grievous Angel, achieved legendary cult status. Parsons died of a drug overdose in Joshua Tree, California, in September 1973.
