Oliver Hardy
Film: comedian, actor, director, United States
Oliver Hardy was an American comic actor who achieved worldwide fame as the portly, pompous partner in the legendary double act Laurel and Hardy. Born in Georgia, Hardy worked extensively in silent shorts throughout the 1910s and 1920s before producer Hal Roach formally paired him with Stan Laurel. Hardy's masterful double takes, direct glances to camera, and polite exasperation became iconic trademarks of physical comedy. Together the duo successfully conquered sound films, headlining over a hundred shorts and features including Sons of the Desert and the Oscar-winning short The Music Box. Hardy retired after a final European tour and died in North Hollywood, California, in August 1957 at sixty-five.
