Stan Laurel

Film: comedian, actor, screenwriter, director, United Kingdom

Stan Laurel was an English comic actor, writer, and director who formed one of cinema's finest comedy partnerships alongside Oliver Hardy. Raised in northern England, Laurel trained in British music hall and understudied Charlie Chaplin before travelling to the United States. At Hal Roach Studios, his creative genius guided Laurel and Hardy's comedy, acting as the primary conceptual force and writer behind their legendary silent and sound pictures. His childlike innocence, bewildered whimpers, and impeccable timing anchored celebrated works like The Music Box and Way Out West. Recognised with an Academy Honorary Award in 1961 for his creative contributions, Laurel died in Santa Monica, California, in February 1965 at seventy-four.
