Groucho Marx
Film: comedian, actor, United States
Groucho Marx was an American comedian and actor whose razor-sharp verbal wit, greasepaint moustache, glasses, and cigar defined twentieth-century American satire. Starting in vaudeville and on Broadway alongside his brothers Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo, he led the Marx Brothers into cinema with supreme comedic anarchy. Masterpieces like Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera relied heavily on his machine-gun delivery and irreverent wordplay. In later life, he reinvented himself as a television pioneer, hosting the long-running quiz show You Bet Your Life. Widely regarded as a comic genius, he received an Honorary Academy Award in 1974. Groucho died in Los Angeles in August 1977 at the age of eighty-six.
