Otis Redding
Music: singer, songwriter, United States
Otis Ray Redding Jr. was an American singer and songwriter acclaimed as one of the most expressive voices in southern soul and rhythm and blues. Recording for the influential Stax label in Memphis, he captured listeners with his passionate vocal delivery, dynamic arrangements, and deeply felt ballads. Masterpieces like Otis Blue and Try a Little Tenderness earned him immense popularity, which he broadened further with an electrifying crossover set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Just days after completing his signature track (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, Redding died when his chartered aeroplane crashed into Lake Monona, Wisconsin, in December 1967.
