Sergio Leone
Director: director, producer, Italy
Sergio Leone was an Italian director who reinvented the Western genre and created some of cinema's most iconic widescreen epics. Born in Rome in 1929 into a film family, he worked as an assistant on large productions before launching the Spaghetti Western phenomenon with A Fistful of Dollars. His Dollars Trilogy transformed Clint Eastwood into a global star and established Leone's signature style of tense, drawn-out close-ups contrasted against vast landscapes. His artistic ambition culminated in operatic masterworks like Once Upon a Time in the West and the sprawling gangster chronicle Once Upon a Time in America. Leone passed away in Rome in 1989.
