Buster Keaton
Film: actor, director, comedian, producer, United States
Buster Keaton, celebrated as The Great Stone Face, was an extraordinary silent screen comedian and visual innovator whose deadpan poise masked daring physical stunts. Raised on the vaudeville stage, he entered motion pictures alongside Roscoe Arbuckle before directing a string of landmark features in the 1920s, including Sherlock, Jr. and The General. Keaton's brilliant spatial geometry and technical ingenuity defined kinetic film comedy. Though studio bureaucracy damaged his independence in the sound era, critical rediscovery in later decades restored his immense reputation. Keaton continued acting in character parts until his death from lung cancer at Woodland Hills, California, in 1966.
