Lillian Gish

Film: actress, director, United States

Lillian Gish was an essential pioneer of screen acting, frequently hailed as the First Lady of American Cinema. Beginning in 1912 with short films at the Biograph Company under D. W. Griffith, she developed refined, emotionally nuanced performance techniques that helped elevate cinema into an art form. Her landmark silent roles in Broken Blossoms, Way Down East, and The Wind set enduring standards for dramatic expression. Unlike many silent contemporaries, Gish sustained a vital theatrical and film career for decades, turning in memorable character performances in Duel in the Sun and Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter. Concluding her screen work with The Whales of August in 1987, she died in New York City in 1993 at ninety-nine.
